Two Smyrnas, Two Different Jobs
Drive through the older part of town and you are looking at housing that was heated long before anybody thought about cooling it. Drive out toward the newer subdivisions and it is heat pumps and flex duct, same as Middletown. Same zip code, completely different service call.
The old town
Narrow lots, older framing, and cooling that was added as a retrofit if it was added at all. We find undersized duct threaded through closets, window units still doing real work in back bedrooms, and boilers or oil-fired equipment on the heating side. Knob-and-tube era houses do not forgive a heavy-handed retrofit, and the right answer here is often ductless rather than forcing duct where it does not belong.
The newer developments
Heat pumps on builder ductwork, and the familiar pattern: one central return, long runs to the far bedrooms, leaky boots, and a second floor that runs warm. The fix is usually duct rather than equipment, and it is usually cheaper than what somebody else quoted you.

What Breaks Around Here
- Oil burner faults in the older houses. Nozzles, electrodes, and pumps. An oil system that has not had its annual cleaning will find a January night to remind you.
- Boiler circulators and zone valves. Common in the older heating systems in town, and usually a repair rather than a replacement.
- Heat pump auxiliary heat running long. The expensive one in the newer developments.

Yes. A lot of contractors have quietly dropped oil, and there is still plenty of it in and around Smyrna, Clayton, Kenton, and out toward Hartly. Oil equipment is priced separately for maintenance because the annual cleaning is more involved than a gas tune-up, and skipping it is how you end up without heat in January.
Ductless is usually the answer, and it is a much better one than it was twenty years ago. Roughly a three inch wall penetration per indoor head, no duct chases cut through plaster, per-room thermostats, and hyper-heating models that produce real heat well below freezing. High-velocity small-duct systems are the other route, though they are more invasive and usually more expensive.
